Roughcasting Scotland
Using roughcasting helps to minimise the effect of water, wind and snow on homes in Scotland. Roughcasting has been around for many centuries and offers good protection against the elements. Roughcast is also known as harling or pebble dash. It is one of the most popular exterior wall finishes for homes in Scotland.
If the underlying layer of roughcast is still fine, you could give your home a brand new look by simply repainting it. It’s best to have a specialist roughcaster come and have a look at your walls to ensure that there are no water bubbles behind the roughcast.
Water accumulation or bubbles collect behind the walls due to two possible issues. The first one is cracked roughcasting. In such a case, the water filters through the crack and accumulate as it has nowhere to go. The second possibility comes from inside your house, if there is a burst pipe or water coming from inside the house. This will infiltrate the walls with water accumulating in a bubble.
When the air temperature goes below zero, the water bubble freezes and expands. This expansion can damage the wall.
Therefore, before applying new roughcast, the expert builder will ensure that there are no bubbles within the walls. If there are, the roughcast layers above the bubbles need to be removed. The builder will need to find the source of the water ingress and stop it before applying a new layer of roughcast.
Roughcast can now come pre-mixed from the factory or done on site. The benefit of pre-mix is the fact that the colour can be already integrated with with mix. This will reduce the maintenance required for the new roughcasted walls as they will not need repainted as often.
Technological advances allows the homeowners to chose the colour required for the exterior walls. The type of gravel can also be modified should you want a different type of rough surface.
